Unknown Mortal Orchestra kicked in a funky contribution to the massive 59-track Day of the Dead tribute to the Grateful Dead, treating listeners to an off-the-wall rendition of 1978 hit “Shakedown Street.” The album version of the interpretation goes heavy on the disco element, using funky guitar rhythms and synthesizers to bring a new life to the old classic.
Last night, Unknown Mortal Orchestra joined a growing list of bands who have taken their Day of the Dead tribute to network television, including The National’s version of “Morning Dew” on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert (watch) and Courtney Barnett’s “New Speedway Boogie” on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon (watch). The group played their “Shakedown” cover on the most recent episode of Conan.
