After 20 days, ten sold-out shows, one new album, an appearance on The Howard Stern Show, a guest spot from Jerry Garcia‘s “Tiger” guitar, and many other accolades, the 2026 Tedeschi Trucks Band residency at New York’s Beacon Theatre came to a close last night. To end such a historic run, Derek Trucks brought things back to the beginning of his history with the Beacon by calling up his former Allman Brothers Band bandmates Jaimoe and Warren Haynes.
Before the Beacon became an annual anchor for TTB, it was first the home court for the Allman Brothers Band. The seminal Southern rockers racked up more than 230 sold-out shows at the Beacon Theatre over the years, and chose the Upper West Side stage for their final show in October 2014. The Tedeschi Trucks Band was still in its infancy in those days, though it already had a Best Blues Album Grammy for the band’s 2011 debut, Revelator.
Fast forward more than a decade after the Allman Brothers took their final bows, and the Tedeschi Trucks Band has taken up the mantle of hosting annual Beacon residencies. TTB even shifted this year’s run to March, a month that historically brought the Allmans to the Beacon.
The 81-year-old John Lee Johnson, known simply as Jaimoe, was the first to join in on Saturday, following a full-album performance of TTB’s latest release, Future Soul. The sole surviving original member of the Allman Brothers joined drummers Tyler Greenwell and Isaac Eady for a powerful rhythmic trio, closing the first set with Billy Taylor‘s “I Wish I Knew”. Jaimoe stuck around through the remainder of the show, adding propulsion to covers of fellow countercultural icons Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (“Ohio”, with a bit of Jimi Hendrix‘s “Machine Gun”) and Sly & the Family Stone (“You Can Make It If You Try” > “Everyday People”).
As the second set wore on with songs by The Rolling Stones, Sleepy John Estes, Ben E. King, and TTB originals, the anticipation grew. Surely, they’re gonna play some Allman Brothers with Jaimoe?
They saved the best for last (unless you count Cyndi Lauper making another unexpected appearance for a Beatles encore), as guitarist Warren Haynes returned to the Beacon Theatre stage. After keeping the Allman Brothers’ music at a respectable distance in recent years, last year saw Trucks once again embrace the lineage as TTB joined Haynes’ Gov’t Mule for a run of co-headlining tour dates, featuring nightly Allman Bros covers. Saturday marked Warren’s second guest spot at this year’s Beacon run, following a sit-in last Friday on “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” and Little Feat‘s “Spanish Moon”.
As Warren, Derek, and Jaimoe crept into “Dreams” on Saturday on the Beacon stage, there wasn’t much more you could ask for from a night out in Manhattan. What followed was nearly half an hour of Southern rock bliss, Derek and Warren winding their co-leads around each other during “Whipping Post” in the tradition of Duane Allman and Dickey Betts.
Having stood on his own two feet for so long, outside the shadow of the Allman Brothers legacy, Derek’s recent homecomings to the catalog have been all the more joyous and—speaking as an outsider looking in—genuine. He’s not required to be on the Beacon stage every March playing songs he was born into. Instead, he chooses to uncork a bit of the vintage for his and his wife’s party.
