Those who missed the chance to buy Jerry Garcia‘s “Tiger” guitar (or didn’t have $11 million to spare) will soon have another opportunity to own a piece of Grateful Dead history. Julien’s Auctions has announced Treasures From The Golden Road, an auction of more than 300 pieces sourced from the personal archives of legendary Grateful Dead crew chief and Jerry Garcia Band manager “Big” Steve Parish, longtime family associate Laurence “Ram Rod” Shurtliff, and Garcia’s daughter Trixie Garcia.
Set to take place live in person at The Box SF in San Francisco and online at juliensauctions.com on April 22nd, the auction features a number of guitars, drums and cymbals, road cases, amplifiers, and other gear used by the band, including two of the Mu‑Tron effect pedals that helped define Jerry’s sound, along with backstage passes, handwritten setlists and lyrics to “Playing in the Band” and “Fire on the Mountain”, and tour itineraries—one bearing a burn mark from Garcia’s cigarette.
Other highlights include leather belts owned by Garcia and Big Steve—the latter featuring a lightning bolt buckle crafted by Owsley “Bear” Stanley—a cowbell played by Mickey Hart at the closing of Winterland Ballroom in 1978, Garcia’s original sketches and artwork, his custom in-ear monitors, and an “Assessment of the Grateful Dead” from the Maryland State Police Criminal Intelligence Division.
“These items represent 50 years of memories and experiences with the Grateful Dead — from the early days to the final shows in Chicago. Each piece tells a story of the music, the journey, and the community that made it all possible,” said Steve Parish. “Being part of that community for all these years has meant everything to me, and I’m proud to continue representing what the Grateful Dead stood for. Now is the time to share these with the fans and collectors who understand what they mean. I’m genuinely excited to give people the opportunity to own the things that have meant so much to me over the decades. The Grateful Dead changed the world, and I’m honored to pass these artifacts on to people who will cherish them the way I have.”
