Tedeschi Trucks Band closed out the second weekend of their Beacon Theatre residency with a guest-filled jam session that once again proved their place as one of the all-time premiere rock and roll orchestras. After surprise sit-ins from Wilco’s Nels Cline and multi-instrumentalist/producer Mike Elizondo (Dr. Dre) on Wednesday, followed by visits from Warren Haynes and Julian Lage on Friday—which also marked TTB’s milestone 70th Beacon show and the release of their new album Future Soul—Saturday’s showcase featured appearances from the Queen of Quirky Pop Cyndi Lauper, The Black Crowes guitarist Nico Bereciartua, and bassist James Genus of the SNL band.

Between Gabe Dixon on vocals and keys and the horn section of Kebbi Williams on saxophone, Emmanuel Echem on trumpet and Elizabeth Lea on trombone, there never seems to be a disappointing note. Aided and abetted by a trio of powerhouse backing vocalists, Mike Mattison, Mark Rivers, and Alecia Chakour, along with a rock-solid rhythm section of drummers Isaac Eady and Tyler Greenwell and bassist Brandon Boone, Tedeschi Trucks Band has impeccable talent on every instrument, not to mention the pair of blues guitar badasses who top the bill.

There’s little left unsaid about the talents of guitarists Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks. Tedeschi is an evocative singer and player while Trucks can make a fairly solid claim to being the finest slide guitar player on the planet. Separately they’re both capable of leading successful rock solid touring bands, but combined they’re a force of nature that simply can’t be stopped.

The first set was loaded with crowd-pleasing originals like “Ain’t That Something”, “Misunderstood”, and “Be Kind” that set a positive vibe immediately. The later part of the set revolved around some choice covers, including a pair of Derek and the Dominoes tracks (“Bell Bottom Blues” and “Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad?”) and a couple from Sly & the Family Stone (“You Can Make It If You Try” and “Everyday People”) before a sizzling “Bound For Glory” closed out the opening stretch with a bang. It was a satisfying, if not somewhat by-the-numbers start that left the audience hungry for more.

To start the second set, Tedeschi and Trucks were joined by ’80s pop icon and recent Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Cyndi Lauper. Though she is best known for her vocal talents, Lauper—who shared the stage with TTB during the band’s show-stopping tribute to Joe Cocker at the 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony—proved she has the blues chops to hang with the band on guitar as well. Her visit was brief, but the grins shared between Lauper, Susan, and Derek as they traded licks and lyrics made the collaboration one of the most joyful moments of the night.

From there, the parade of epic blues-infused jams continued unabated. The next most gripping second set highlight wasn’t nearly as upbeat. An intense, unfortunately still timely take on Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young‘s “Ohio” was packed to the seams with heart-breaking, aching blues guitar. Tragically, the music and the lyrical content fit the mood of the nation, resonating just as much now as it did decades ago. The anguish of the line “How many more?” resounded all too easily with the streets once again filled with protests and rage against a murderous administration.

Lauper wasn’t the only guest to pop out in the second set. Nico Bereciartua joined in on guitar for a cover of Sleepy John Estes‘ “leaving Trunk”, and James Genus helped close out the set with “Hero” and Dr. John‘s “I Walk on Guilded Splinters”, helping to push the show’s last stanza in a more positive direction. Genus stuck around for the encore, putting a positive spin on Joe Tex’s “Show Me”.

Deep into a demanding run of shows, TTB succeeded in making Saturday stand out. With just three nights left at The Beacon, there’s sure to be more surprises to come in the final weekend.
