Sierra Hull has announced the release of a new EP, The Movements—a three-part bluegrass concerto—on all streaming platforms and vinyl April 10th. The work originated from a 2022 commission by the FreshGrass Festival in North Adams, MA and marks the first official recording of a piece that has been a fixture of Hull’s live performances for several years.
Hull conceived the work as a three-movement piece following the traditional fast-slow-fast concerto structure, blending composed passages with room for improvisation. Her band—Avery Merritt, Erik Coveney, Mark Raudabaugh, and Shaun Richardson—contributed significantly to the writing process. “Each of them brought great ideas to the table to help me finish the piece, ultimately making it even more meaningful than it would have been just on my own as a sole composer,” Hull wrote in a social media post confirming the release.
The band recorded The Movements shortly after its festival premiere, but the project was delayed while Hull finished her album A Tip Toe High Wire and maintained a busy tour schedule. Movement 3 became a regular part of their live set in recent years, with Movements 1 and 2 appearing occasionally, “when we were craving a challenge.”
In fall 2025, the band returned to FreshGrass for the first time since the premiere and recorded a live in-studio version at the festival’s Studio 9, which Hull plans to release on her YouTube channel. “I think it’s interesting to hear how The Movements have evolved since those earliest days spent playing them,” she wrote. The recording, she noted, is “truly a capture of the earliest days of this group of musicians learning to make music together.”
